Dales Jam

Dales Jam is an exciting improvising community jazz ensemble which rehearses at the Skipton Auction Mart. It has all the instruments you would expect in a big band – and some that you wouldn’t – and aims to cater for all ages, all instruments and all abilities.  It is an off-shoot of the Blackburn based improvising community jazz ensemble, The Jam Factory, which was created in 1997 by Steve Berry.

The majority of the pieces Dales Jam play are written especially for the band, many of them by members of the band, including Musical Director, Richard Ormrod.

Richard is a multi-instrumentalist, band leader, composer and arranger.  As a performer, composer and arranger, Richard uses jazz and improvisation to explore a wide range of music from around the world as well as western art music, film and show tunes, and European folk and pop music.

So, in Richard’s pieces for Dales Jam, you are likely to hear hints of the sounds of South Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Klezmer, Funk, Pop and Indian classical music.  A heady mix!

Even if you’re not a fan of jazz, it’s quite an experience to hear the huge sound the band makes and to see the enthusiasm of people from many different walks of life, and ranging in age from 10 to 70, come together to make music.

Or, as Dales Jam says about itself on its website, “Imagine the Glen Miller Orchestra – well, we’re nothing like that. So, come along and see for yourself”.
